How Do You Define Self-Care?

When I ask people what self-care means to them, they usually say an annual vacation, an occasional soak in a tub or a massage. Very often, I find people are still feeling overwhelmed or blah even after completing one of their self-care rituals.

This isn’t a good place to be. In fact, it can be quite discouraging and even more draining, if you’ve been trying to take time for yourself. You may even begin to ask yourself, “What’s wrong with me? Why do I feel this way? Why can’t somebody take care of me for a change?” The good thing to know is you’re not alone. Self-compassion is often neglected by many people.

Perhaps you’ve taken the advice of someone who seems to be happy and full of energy all the time in an effort to duplicate his or her results. Maybe you have tried something like yoga or meditation that just didn’t feel right. You’re trying lots of things but nothing seems to be fulfilling.  Very often, we do what’s popular instead of what’s authentic to us as it relates to self-compassion.

So, I’ll ask the question again…”How do you define self-care?”  This self-care survey will help you identify your specific self-care needs. Once you complete it, you can explore what works and what doesn’t.  I want to hear from you.  Tell me how you define self-care, what are your challenges as it relates to self-care and how you feel when you are making time for yourself.

  1. Great post. Self-care is an interesting thing. I find that my focus ebbs and flows. Sometimes I am more focused on physical well-being, desiring more energy or to lose weight. Other times, I focus more on my spiritual needs or relationship health. And I find that I need to change it up so that I do not get bored or stuck. It certainly is a personalized experience for every individual. Thanks for sharing!

    I totally agree with you about people doing what is popular in self-care instead of what feels right for them. I took the self care survey and I scored in the middle. What works for me is making sure I eat healthy foods every day. I enjoy cooking and trying new recipes so eating healthy is easy for me. I enjoy meditating each morning even if it’s only for 5 minutes. I also have found having a day where I do nothing, but relaxing activities that I enjoy once a month is very rejuvenating. My challenge is movement/exercise. I really enjoy hot yoga, but it takes 3 hours out of my schedule so I don’t always make time for it. Dancing in the morning gets the heart rate going and is what I try t do daily.
